President: Joy Ruth S. Matanguihan, J.D.

Raised in Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines, Joy Ruth S. Matanguihan‘s (or “Joy“)’s servant-leadership began  at the age of 11, as the youngest Junior Jaycee in her town, which later propelled her to becoming an elected Chairwoman of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines in her City Chapter while concurrently being an athlete and Military Training Officer of her High School Alma Mater. At 16, she started her homegrown business, while finishing her Bachelors Degree in Economics at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. She was also an athlete for the University’s Swimming Team. A recognized student-leader and an alumna of the Ateneo Student Leaders Assembly 2, having successfully spearheaded projects and events with different organizations at the Ateneo, Joy has since been invited to travel around the country to train the youth on servant-leadership and youth entrepreneurship. She received a law school scholarship from the Philippine government, an offer she did not decline while working full-time with Senators and Congressmen. She worked as an Economist to the Senate Economic Planning Office and the Office of (then) Senator Sergio Osmena III, and has authored many policy research studies that aided in drafting and amending Philippine laws. She was also a consultant to the Senate Employee’s Union and several multi-national firms in the Philippines.

Since moving to Tennessee in 2011 and graduating from law school in the Philippines, Joy has become a successful professional particularly in the insurance business. From becoming a multi-awarded captive agent of a well-respected Fortune 100 insurance company, she now owns her insurance brokerage firm and is the CEO of Ligaya Insurance Group, catering 43 states of the US. She is also a consultant to multi-national companies, helping train expatriates on international business affairs. She has also been heavily engaged in several non-profit organizations, assisting business entities, especially those in the grassroots level, grow successfully and responsibly.

Being in public service for more than two decades, Joy’s membership to the Board in 2013 became a force to reckon with. As the former Recording Secretary, she made sure that all transactions are properly recorded, accountability strengthened, the Filipino-Americans are engaged in the community and the age-old fissures between Fil-Am associations are bridged.  She recently served as the Board Secretary of the Fairview Area Chamber of Commerce, and Diversity Leader in various Bar Associations including the Nashville Bar Association and Tennessee Bar Association. She is also a member of the Tennessee American Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the American Association of Justice. Joy recently graduated from the Nashville School of Law with her Juris Doctorate Degree, became a Supreme Court Rule 31 Trained Civil Mediator, and was also admitted to the prestigious Master of Laws Program (with focus on International Laws, and International Arbitration) at the University of Miami, Florida, alongside well-respected attorneys from all continents.

Despite her tough and resilient character, and very demanding schedule, Joy is always a joy to everyone around her: very warm, charismatic, outgoing and bubbly, and will always light up the room in any FAAT event. Since becoming the President, Joy has focused on delivering services to the Filipinos and Fil-Americans, connecting with charities and raising awareness about the Philippine culture, heritage and arts. She attributes the success of her leadership to her loving family, the synergy of the selfless talented people serving with her and the presence of God in everything she does.

Vice President: Gilbert Ramirez

As a seasoned public servant, FAAT is very honored to have “Officer Ramirez” or “Gilbert” on Board. He has done tremendous work in providing free social and cultural services not only to the Filipino-Americans but also to the Hispanic Community in Middle Tennessee. Officer Ramirez grew up in a Hispanic-Filipino household — his father is Puerto Rican while his mother is half-Filipino half-Puerto Rican, but his full-blooded Filipino grandparents raised him. He calls his grandparents Mom and Dad.

Gilbert is also serving as the Community Affairs Officer of the El Protector Program of Metro Nashville Police Department. As such, Officer Ramirez has spearheaded various programs for the Latino and Filipino community benefitting many immigrants who are greatly in need of assistance. He actively solicits companies to participate in the program, which the entire community in Middle Tennessee greatly appreciates.

Ever since serving with FAAT since 2014, as an appointed Social Secretary under the previous of Jaycel Montealegre, Gilbert has brought so much vitality to the organization, bringing in people and sponsors for every event. He is always hands-on logistics, the first to arrive and last to leave. Gilbert’s role as a police officer also adds comfort to the organization as he is able to reach out to the Police Department for security assistance in our events. Further, as a previous business owner of an Alarm and Telecommunications Company in Bronx, NY (prior to becoming a Police Officer), Gilbert offers not only strong business acumen but the dexterity and skills of a business leader. He is a well-respected public servant concurrently serving as a Board Member of the Nashville Cares and the Tennessee Latin American Chamber of Commerce. He attended Miami Dade Community College for a Degree in Business Marketing and Administration and currently studying at Bethel University to expand his knowledge in Business Administration. Both his children Camila (13) and Andres (20) are also active in the community. If you see a mascot in FAAT’s events, that probably is our beloved Camila, Gilbert’s daughter.

Recording Secretary: Marjorie Peacock

Coming from Compostela Valley, Philippines, Marjorie Vicente Peacock or “Marj” was a school teacher before moving to Tennessee with her wonderful husband. She obtained her Bachelors degree from the Ateneo de Davao University, and has been helping make a difference in various communities. Having a Jesuit background of ‘serving others above self,’ it is easy to see why Marj does not mind helping the community in decision-making even if it means asking her husband to stay put and assist her in typing Board Minutes and all other FAAT events.

Social Secretary: Marithza Ellison

Historian: Tess Moulder

“Tita Tess” (“Tita” means Auntie in Filipino”) or Tess Moulder is among the original founding members of FAAT. She has been serving the community for the last 17 years and is the best person to ask for anything regarding FAAT’s history. She is a force to reckon on every cultural presentation as she knows almost all Philippine dances, and more than likely has the costumes for them! If no costume is available, she definitely can make them from carefully picked fabrics. Alongside every dance is her beautiful 90-year-old mother Lola Anita who is the darling of our organization, and still can rock the dance floor on her grandma high heels! Being a Registered Nurse by profession at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tita Tess surely knows how to care for everyone and we are very blessed to have her all throughout these years.
